Generic food photography does not sell a restaurant, the story behind the dish does.
GenMonk is a restaurant marketing agency built around specificity. Generic food photography does not sell a restaurant, the story behind the dish does.
Instagram, not Zomato, is now the first impression
The discovery path for Indian diners has quietly reordered itself. A large majority of young Indians now check a restaurant's Instagram before deciding where to eat, and food-related Instagram searches convert into an actual visit at a striking rate, often within 48 hours. Restaurants posting actively, several times a week, report meaningfully higher first-time footfall than those relying on aggregator listings alone. Zomato and Swiggy remain essential for delivery discovery and typically carry commissions in the 18 to 28 percent range, but for dine-in footfall specifically, Instagram has become the primary decision surface, not a supporting channel.
What performs on that surface has also shifted. Overproduced, studio-lit food photography now reads as generic in a feed full of it. What outperforms is content with texture, the sizzle of a tawa, the pour of a gravy, a chef's hands mid-plating, alongside genuine behind-the-kitchen footage. Cloud kitchens face a sharper version of this problem: with no walk-past footfall at all, effectively all demand has to be manufactured through Zomato and Swiggy listings, Instagram, and increasingly WhatsApp, which raises the stakes on getting the content right rather than treating it as an afterthought to the aggregator relationship.
How GenMonk approaches F&B
High-volume content production built for the pace F&B brands actually need, culturally specific storytelling that reflects a restaurant's actual character and region rather than generic food-photography templates, and Reels and carousels designed to convert scroll into footfall or delivery orders, whichever a brand actually needs more of. We treat aggregator listing content (Zomato, Swiggy) and brand-building content (Instagram) as connected, not separate efforts.
Best fit for: restaurants, cafes, cloud kitchens, and F&B brands that want content people actually crave, not just look at.
